MUNSTER CHAMPIONSHIP 2010 Waterford Crystal Swimming Club in one of the 1st major Gala of the current year sent one of the clubs largest and strongest squad's representing the city in years. This was the first Gala where swimmers had to obey the new FINA rules regulating high performance swim wear. The Squad consisted of the following swimmers who achieved the necessary qualification times, Sadbh O’Sullivan, Denise O’Connor, Bernadette Power, David O’Sullivan, Diarmaid Brennan, Aibhne Breathnach, Tommy Bergin, Muireann Breathnach, Shauna O’Brien, Maggie Doolan, Emily Codd, Colm Dowling, Louise Kent, Niamh Cleary, Clare Larkin, Magdalena Gierega, Saoirse Meabh McAreavey, Rhian O'Callaghan Abbey Madigan, Ciara Duffy Niblock, Jacob Roche, Ken Breathnach and Ben Jacob, As in recent years Crystal swimmers dominated the proceeding at the UL complex with Crystals Colm Dowling winning a total of 7 gold medals , Colm won the following events,50m 100m and 200m Backstroke,200m Fly ,50m Breaststroke,400m medley and 1500m free. In the 1500m free Colm completed the event in a very respectful time of 17mins 34 seconds leaving Kingdoms Chris Rogers a full 10 seconds behind to claim Gold. Equally impressive was Ken Breathnach who won a total of 3 gold and 2 Bronze at the Gala, Ken won the 50m and 100m free, as well as the 200m medley. Bronze medals were achieved in the 50 Fly and 400m Free. Tommy Bergin has slowly upped his training of late and although not quite realising his full potential at this gala took home silver in the 200m fly, with bronze in the 400m medley and 200m breaststroke. Clare Larkin took silver in the 200m Backstroke, and was third in the 100m backstroke in a time of 1.14.52.This was a very impressive performance from the Ferrybank student who improves at every Gala. Shauna O’Brien took Gold in the 50m Fly where she holds the current Irish Junior record, She also produced Gold in the 400m medley and was second in the 400m free. Louise Kent was 2nd in the 200m free, 50m and 100m back, with bronze in the 50m, 400m and 800m free. Niamh Cleary also performed well at this Gala with Niamh winning Silver in the 200m medley in a time of 2.44 along with Bronze in the 200m breaststroke and 200m free. Several of our younger swimmers produced several pbs on the day well done to one and all.
