 Waterford Crystal Swimming Club

In the beginning was the company “Waterford Crystal ltd” who in their wisdom decided to create a sports complex that included a swimming pool to reward their members and their families, for their endeavour, with a recreational facility where members could exercise and relax in an environment of excellence and tranquillity.

In 1970 this project and foresight was way ahead of its time and showed tremendous forward thinking in pursuing a policy of well being and healthy living for their employees, and it was through this initiative that the Waterford Crystal Swimming Club was founded. The facilities available at the club include a sports hall, sauna, gym, learner pool, a 25 meter 5 lane swimming pool, a lounge & bar, an athletics track, two tennis courts, pitch and putt course and six pitches for various games like soccer, rugby and hockey.

A small number of members formed a committee to initiate a swimming club where children could learn to swim and participate in water safety. This was their primary objective and in time the need to enter the competitive arena was obvious and a natural progression occurred.

The name of Waterford crystal was synonymous with initiative, intuition, integrity and quality, and likewise this was the criteria which created a foundation for the development for all the skill associated with the teaching and coaching of swimming within the Waterford Crystal Swimming Club. This was a decision taken at the beginning that would survive the test of time and create an environment where the quality and pursuit of excellence would be established to ensure that champions would be created and blossom into international athletes. There was always a child friendly atmosphere present within the club structure and this was obvious when travelling way to swimming competitions in the way swimmers interacted with each other in a fun care free manner.

The clubs first breakthrough came when they won a medal in the national community games swimming finals, followed by the first Munster age group and then senior provincial title. The club took great pride in these achievements, but the quest and craving for more would only be satisfied by a total embracing of quality, honesty and reality in terms of structure within the competitive arena. This was pursued and a structure was put in place in the early years to ensure this long term objective would be successful.

This in fact turned out to be the case and the club started to achieve its goals with success at all levels from Munster championships to national and international level success. During the intervening years the club also created new Irish junior and senior individual and relay national records, and so becoming a major player in Irish swimming. The club have reached the stage where the name Waterford Crystal Swimming Club is both feared and respected by competitors in this demanding sport. The club learns from the past, enjoys the present and looks forward to the future with optimism and confidence.

The club has had a number of coaches over the years, the head coach for the last 36 years and even to this day is Brian Williamson (the boss), as he likes to be known as. He built on a small young club and brought it to highly competitive level using his experience and disciplined training sets with many swimmers originating and advancing through the ranks of the clubs swimming lessons which provide a solid teaching base. The club operates on a purely amateur basis but still encourages all its swimmers to embrace and break through the pain barrier, Aim high, Achieve their goals, be a winner!

The clubs long term aim is to continue to create an environment where its members will look back on their swimming careers with pride and fond memories, and feel it was a worthwhile venture in their lives. May it continue to prosper for future generations.
